Dell Inspiron 5000e
Last updated July 30, 2003
This laptop is very well supported under Linux so there will probably be few (if any) changes to this page.
Software Setup
-
OS: Dual booting Gentoo Linux and Windows XP
Installation
I have also run Mandrake and Redhat on this laptop, but most of my time with this laptop has been spent with Gentoo.
The Gentoo install was pretty straightforward (as far as installing Gentoo can be anyway). Booting from the install CD my PCMCIA wireless network card worked without any configuration and I was able to move on with the install. The base install worked perfectly using the instructions supplied on the Gentoo Website.
Using Gentoo’s excellent emerge program I was able to download and install KDE as well as all other software I needed. Additionally I was also able to get the linmodem drivers working by simply emerging them.
What works / doesn’t work?
Well quite frankly, everything has worked for me.
Works:
-
Graphics in X
-
Direct Rendering
-
Framebuffer
-
Sound
-
Keyboard
-
Touchpad
-
PCMCIA
-
APM
-
Internal Modem
-
DVD Playback
Doesn’t Work:
-
ACPI (the only thing I haven’t been able to get working)
Don’t Know:
- I haven’t tried any suspend/resume scripts or programs so I can not verify whether that works or not.
