VMware License Upgrade

Well, I finally managed to our VMware licensing at work upgraded to Virtual Infrastructure 3 Enterprise. I also created my first DRS/HA cluster and after monitoring migration recommendations for a few days turned the load balancing to automatic. So far everything has gone quite smoothly.

The migration of my host systems into a cluster went much faster and was easier than I expected. It was basically a matter of dragging hosts into the cluster and allowing them to be configured.

Now that all of my ESX 3.0 hosts are in the new cluster I have to get back to migrating the rest of my environment from ESX 2.5 to 3.0. The migration for the version upgrade has been slow and rather irritating. I have to schedule outages for each VM so it can be moved and upgraded before it is brought back online under ESX 3.0. I have 40 virtual machines on five host systems upgraded, but still have over 60 VMs and nine hosts left to upgrade. Some of the old host systems may not be upgraded, depending on where I end up for capacity when I’m done with the virtual machine migrations.
